{"id":1701,"date":"2011-01-06T09:20:52","date_gmt":"2011-01-06T14:20:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wilktone.com\/?p=1701"},"modified":"2011-01-06T09:20:52","modified_gmt":"2011-01-06T14:20:52","slug":"another-wycliffe-gordon-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilktone.com\/?p=1701","title":{"rendered":"Another Wycliffe Gordon Video"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve been posting a lot about Wycliffe Gordon lately, partly because I recently had the opportunity to <a href=\"http:\/\/wilktone.com\/?p=1569\">back him up<\/a> in concert, but mostly because he&#8217;s a great trombonist. \u00a0I got emailed the link to this video and was asked about what I thought of what&#8217;s happening with Wycliffe&#8217;s chops at 4:10 into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"656\" height=\"369\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oIJFlqWYVUU?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">You get a few good looks at his embouchure in this video. \u00a0His setting is very stable, with very little excess motion. \u00a0This makes it hard to spot his <a href=\"http:\/\/wilktone.com\/?p=41\">embouchure motion<\/a>, but I think I can see some examples of it in there (could be my confirmation bias, but I&#8217;ve noted his embouchure motion in person close up, so I&#8217;m pretty certain it&#8217;s down to ascend, up to descend). \u00a0One interesting exception happens around 4:00 into the video. \u00a0About 4:07 he takes the mouthpiece off to lick his lips and then resets just before he pastes a double Eb! \u00a0The rest that follows is only speculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t think Wycliffe is using this to reset his mouthpiece placement to a different position on the lips here. \u00a0Some players do that for extreme ranges, sometimes to just a slightly different setting and sometimes completely switching <a href=\"https:\/\/wilktone.com\/?p=7337\">embouchure types<\/a>. \u00a0While the placement does look a bit lower for the Eb, I suspect that this is just his downward embouchure motion pulling his lips down. \u00a0First, he descends down from there and his timbre is consistently the same as before. \u00a0Usually a change in setting has a noticeable effect on the tone, which I don&#8217;t hear (although it could be the recording isn&#8217;t enough to bring it out). \u00a0Secondly, Wycliffe plays into that extreme upper register all the time, often going from very low notes very quickly. \u00a0If he was resetting the mouthpiece to a different placement for the high notes in this video, he doesn&#8217;t seem to need to usually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to Paul for spotting this video and sending me the link. &nbsp;It&#8217;s got a nice look at a trombonist&#8217;s embouchure and is some great playing too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been posting a lot about Wycliffe Gordon lately, partly because I recently had the opportunity to back him up in concert, but mostly because he&#8217;s a great trombonist. \u00a0I got emailed the link to this video and was asked about what I thought of what&#8217;s happening with Wycliffe&#8217;s chops at 4:10 into it.
