{"id":2968,"date":"2012-02-11T09:22:43","date_gmt":"2012-02-11T14:22:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wilktone.com\/?p=2968"},"modified":"2023-03-29T11:50:17","modified_gmt":"2023-03-29T15:50:17","slug":"guess-the-embouchure-type-martin-kretzer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilktone.com\/?p=2968","title":{"rendered":"Guess the Embouchure Type: Martin Kretzer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s been a while since I played &#8220;Guess the Embouchure Type.&#8221; \u00a0Aulis sent me a link to a video he spotted of the Berlin Philharmoniker performing an excerpt from Benjamin Britten&#8217;s <em>Young Person&#8217;s Guide to the Orchestra<\/em> with a good look at trumpet player\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.berliner-philharmoniker.de\/en\/berliner-philharmoniker\/the-orchestra\/musician\/musiker\/martin-kretzer\/\">Martin Kretzer&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0embouchure. \u00a0Take a close look at around <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/waP1N446Zb0?t=2m6s\">2:07<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/waP1N446Zb0?t=2m13s\">2:14<\/a> and see which <a href=\"https:\/\/wilktone.com\/?p=7337\">embouchure type<\/a> you think Kretzer has. \u00a0My guess after the break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"656\" height=\"369\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/waP1N446Zb0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Kretzer&#8217;s mouthpiece placement is low enough on his lips that I&#8217;m fairly confident he has a &#8220;low placement type&#8221; embouchure. &nbsp;If you look closely you might be able to spot his embouchure motion of pulling his mouthpiece and lips together down to ascend and pushing them up to descend, although the intervals he plays at those moment aren&#8217;t really very wide and it can be easy to miss or mistake what&#8217;s going on. &nbsp;Still, I think it&#8217;s very likely that the low placement embouchure type guess is probably likely for Kretzer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">While I&#8217;m at it, I&#8217;d like to point out the other trumpet player&#8217;s off-center mouthpiece placement (I think it&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.berliner-philharmoniker.de\/en\/berliner-philharmoniker\/the-orchestra\/musician\/musiker\/tamas-velenczei\/\">Tam\u00e1s Velenczei<\/a>). &nbsp;Many teachers discourage an off-center placement, but you can easily find very fine brass performers playing with <a href=\"http:\/\/wilktone.com\/?p=2457\">off-center mouthpiece placements<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">In his email to me Aulis mentioned that he finds upstream classical brass musicians to be rare. &nbsp;I&#8217;ve also noticed that it&#8217;s easier to find low placement players in jazz than classical, but I suspect that there are a lot more classical players with this embouchure type than most people realize (brass musicians with the physical characteristics that suits them to play with an upstream embouchure are rarer than the downstream types, regardless of style). &nbsp;While jazz players tend to be more open to unusual embouchures than classical and classical musicians tend to go through an educational system that discourages students from placing the mouthpiece lower on the lips (or off-center), it&#8217;s just plain easier to find videos and photographs of brass jazz musicians where you can get a good look at their chops. &nbsp;Professional classical musicians usually spend their careers performing in orchestras. &nbsp;A clip from a video like this one will usually only briefly show the brass sections and rarely close enough to get a really good look at their chops. &nbsp;If anyone comes across other videos of classical brass players with a clear look at their embouchures please <a href=\"http:\/\/wilktone.com\/?page_id=186\">send it along to me<\/a> and I&#8217;ll play more &#8220;Guess the Embouchure Type.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Nice find, Aulis!
