{"id":3563,"date":"2012-05-16T05:39:02","date_gmt":"2012-05-16T09:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wilktone.com\/?p=3563"},"modified":"2023-03-30T09:39:18","modified_gmt":"2023-03-30T13:39:18","slug":"guess-the-embouchure-type-denver-dill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wilktone.com\/?p=3563","title":{"rendered":"Guess the Embouchure Type &#8211; Denver Dill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/wilktone.com\/?p=3486\">blogged recently<\/a> about Denver Dill&#8217;s new book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.denverdill.com\/products-page\/book\/still-playing\/\">Still Playing, My Journey Through Embouchure Surgery and Rehabilitation<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0Shortly before my copy of his book arrived I got an email from Denver, who happened to come across this site. \u00a0After watching some of my embouchure <a href=\"http:\/\/wilktone.com\/?page_id=2991\">vods<\/a> he was interested in putting together something similar that would show his embouchure. \u00a0He demonstrates his mouthpiece placement both prior to the surgery and after. \u00a0Denver also got a hold of a transparent mouthpiece for his video, posted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/BandWestPoint\">West Point Band&#8217;s YouTube page<\/a>. \u00a0Take a look and see if you can guess Denver&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/wilktone.com\/?p=7337\">embouchure type<\/a>. \u00a0My guess after the break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"656\" height=\"369\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lluT9NilZ8M?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">While it&#8217;s interesting to see how Denver&#8217;s mouthpiece placement moved more centered after his surgery, I think both his pre-surgery and post-surgery embouchures are both examples of the medium high placement type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s good that Denver got a hold of a transparent mouthpiece for this, as his placement is close enough to half and half that it becomes challenging to determine which lip predominates inside the mouthpiece and whether the embouchure is <a href=\"https:\/\/wilktone.com\/?p=7332\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7332\">upstream or downstream<\/a>. \u00a0Since both the medium high placement and low placement embouchure types have the same <a href=\"https:\/\/wilktone.com\/?p=7333\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7333\">embouchure motion<\/a>\u00a0(pulling the mouthpiece and lips together down to ascend), it&#8217;s best to use a transparent mouthpiece to look at the air stream. \u00a0Looking at his lip position inside the mouthpiece, to me it seems pretty clear that he&#8217;s directing the air downstream. \u00a0As he ascends you can see how his lower lip rolls slightly inward and the air stream gets blown down even closer to the rim, typical for downstream players. \u00a0Compare Denver&#8217;s lip position to this <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/lyxXOcHhYV4?t=20m43s\">upstream trumpet player<\/a> (although the low brass examples that follow in that video have a clearer view of the lips while playing). \u00a0Denver&#8217;s lips look much more like this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lyxXOcHhYV4&amp;feature=player_embedded\">downstream trumpet player&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Denver noted to me that his placement is quite low, right on the vermillion line, and so he would guess low placement type. &nbsp;I would prefer to see his chops in person before committing, but I&#8217;m pretty certain I would guess his embouchure type as medium high placement, rather than low placement type. &nbsp;I also don&#8217;t see any evidence that he needs to change his embouchure type. &nbsp;The range and excerpts he demonstrates in this video are quite impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">What do you think?
