Guess the Embouchure Type – Lee Morgan

It’s been a while since I did a “Guess the Embouchure Type.”  Here’s a video that has a great look at the chops of Lee Morgan, one of my favorite jazz trumpet players.  Take a look and see if you can work out Morgan’s embouchure type.  My guess after the break.

This one is pretty easy, as Morgan’s is right on his upper lip.  It’s almost certain that this placement with more lower lip inside is upstream, which means his embouchure almost certainly is the “low placement” embouchure type.  His embouchure motion is a little hard to spot, as there aren’t really any particular passages where he makes a large enough register change to easily spot it.  I think that I can see him push up to descend and pull down to ascend. I’ll have to look around and see if I can find any other videos of Morgan that have a clearer look at this.

What do you think?  Have I picked the right embouchure type or did you think something different?  Know of another video of Morgan that has a good look at his chops?  Leave your comments below.

Good video footage to help struggling players like myself. I have a very thin bottom lip and find buzzing difficult as the contact point on the bottom lip moves back and forth on a small roll of flesh on the bottom lip. This also make initial placement very sensitive. Any suggestions to help please?
Many thanks,
Harry

Hmm, I’d have to see how you’re playing to really help. Players who have the anatomy to make an embouchure type like Lee Morgan’s work best are actually in the minority, and your comments don’t really offer any clue one way or another if this sort of thing is what is called for. If you can post some video of your embouchure I will take a look and see if I can spot anything that might help.

I´m not sure about what Harry is telling about his embouchure. But it reminds me Maurice André embouchure set up. Lot´s of upper lip inside the MP and a little bit of bottom lip touching the MP.
I agree about Mr. Lee Morgan´s embouchure type. Great Jazz trumpet player!!
